AAAS SYMPOSIUM
February 14-18 2008 Boston , MA
“ Power in its Place: Science in Tribal Welfare ”
Organizers: Roberto Gonzalez-Plaza, Northwestern University and SEED Graduate Institute
Mimi E. Lam, University of British Columbia and University of New Mexico
What is the specific role for science education in Indian welfare? The mandate facing Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) is education that reflects the identity and sovereignty of the tribal communities chartering them. The crucible in the future Indian educational process is to significantly increase federal and local funding, and a commitment to the welfare of Indian people through traditional knowledge, science and technological education. The federal government's violation of treaties guaranteeing Native Americans equitable access to education has created a history of underfunding and neglect of education with dire consequences, especially in delivering new scientific knowledge, and the inability to support the revitalization of cultural traditional knowledge .
